This painting is a metaphor for life.
It is a roller coaster ride of good, and then bad. Pain and pleasure intermingled. But overall, it is beautiful.
I experienced a little of this rose and thorn mischief while this show was underway. While preparing the canvases for
this show I injured the tendons in both of my wrists. It took almost two weeks to heal, and I could not work. I felt a great
deal of despair at the immobility, the pain, and the inconvenience of getting such a late start on the paintings in this show.
I also experienced a great rush of good things that happened all at the same time: a gallery opportunity, the sale of
a painting, a trade opportunity with another artist, meeting a new inspiring and creative friend.
I wanted to portray this existence of life's alternating good and bad, and find a way to show that, in spite of all, it
is still beautiful.
