I
wanted a piece in this show about how we are all different; that it is a “good thing” that
we should accept and embrace. This funny monster painting came about from that idea.
Reece Thompson, an artist friend of mine, who is a graduate
of the Art Center in Pasadena, has been a great help in preparing from this show. He paints monsters, and
his style and technique is very different from my own. I approached him and asked if I could take his subject matter (monsters)
and my idea of combining our different styles, and create a very spontaneous, no judgment, painting with our two different
styles. We turned the music up loud…and off we went! I would make a shape, and
he would add to it in his own way. He’d make a shape, and I would add to it. This
went on non-stop, without analyzing or planning…just lots of laughing.
When we finally finished
and stood back, it was so fun to see the outcome! This crazy, fun painting had come to life as a result of our two styles,
and our different ways of working cooperatively, accepting each other’s differences, and just rolling
with it. I hope our crazy monsters make you smile!
