The Interview

The Reference Photos

Knowing that she wanted to be painted in a Flamenco dancing pose, Gina J had Gena Chipley strike a few dance poses (right there in the gallery!) It was a team effort: Gina Jrel art-directed a few of the poses, and in others she asked Gena Chipley perform random dance moves while she snapped reference photos.

(Left) Some of Gena's dance poses. Gina J took pics of full-body poses, detail face shots, and detail shots of Gena's hands in the uninque, flamenco dancing gestures.

The Preliminary Sketches

Some of the preliminary sketches Gina J presented to Ms. Chipley for her consideration before starting her painting.

These sketches are all charcoal on newsprint, 18"x24" in size, and are based on the reference photos Gina J took of Gena Chipley at the gallery.

Since Ms. Chipley resides in Scottsdale, Arizona, the sketch packet was emailed to her before the painting was started. She then picked her favorite sketch/pose for the final painting.

The Painting in Progress

Gena's finished portrait has gallery-wrapped edges, which are hand painted a solid black. They are adorned with flamenco dancing terms, hand-painted in Gina J's cursive whimsical red script.
