One afternoon I was chatting with a man outside my studio. The topic of the environment came up. He
very matter-of-factly said, “I don’t see what all of the fuss is about. All this bad stuff will happen way down
the road from now. By that time we aren’t gonna be around anyway. So why worry
about it?”
This
resonated within me. I am thankful for his viewpoint. It resolved my painting with crystal clarity.
Before us, for many thousands of years, people have called this planet home; they have taken care of it, and as a result
we are enjoying it now. Yet in the lightning speed of the past 100+ years, we have destroyed it for all
those who will follow us, in the interest of greed, convenience, power and selfishness.
“For the children” - that is the main reason
we should care, get involved, do a little, or do a lot. I don’t even have children myself, but I
still feel passionately that we have the to responsibility to repair damages (if we can), protect what we can, and leave something
for future generations.
