About the Painting:
This song line reflects the consistent, gypsy-like quality of my life.
Independent.
Free.
In flight.
Always on the move. Not tied down.
Without roots.
Always seeking.
No strings attached.
All of the above, for better and/or worse.
The song line from Rhiannon says this beautifully (leave it to incredible songwriter and singer Stevie Nicks to capture
such a wide idea in a beautifully compact line.)
I wanted the painting to reflect all of these things. The pose of the bird show the non-stagnant state of motion, movement,
and conveys the sense of freedom I wanted to show. Never touching down for long.
The beautiful, furry strings are clipped from one of my scarves, a work of art made by friend and fellow local artist,
Janet Brown. The strings were attached to
the piece in a very intentional way. I wanted to show the concept of freedom by showing "no strings attached."
The bird is surrounded by the beautiful strings, but none are attached to it.
This piece makes me laugh when I look at it. It immediately conjures up a mental movie of the process of attaching the
strings to the painting. This was an incredibly challenging endeavor that resulted in liquid weld EVERYWHERE, including my
hands, kitchen floor, and even on my dogs. Not pretty. My fingers were pretty much encrusted in the stuff.
It is the memory I will probably always associate with this piece. There may be no strings attached to the bird in the
painting, but they were attached to everything else in my life (literally!) ha ha.
