Anyone who knows me if familiar with my sarcastic sense of humor. It frequently rears its head in my paintings, much like
an editorial cartoonist drips ink from a poison pen.
When I am "bugged" by something, or don't understand it, or if it makes no sense to me, there is a good chance
the absurdity or dark humor I derive from he topic will end up on canvas. This painting falls into that category.
I absolutely cannot stand the over-used phrase "positive person." I also happen to think that the whole "negative
attitude" thing is really business or religious propaganda that prevents people from getting upset about things they
(secretly) disagree with. Enough already.
Personally, I find people who put on a perpetual "happy face" to be more than a bit creepy. I can't help but
wonder what REALLY lurks behind the fake smiles. What is being repressed, surpressed. What slimy monsters lurk beneath the
smiling surface. The old sci-fi movie "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" comes to mind. Are they real, or "pod";
people?
I am a blatant realist. I can't live my life with Jackie-O-sized rose colored glasses on just for the sake of being perceived
as a "positive" person. Gag.
I believe that we as human beings were constructed, and intended, to experience ALL kinds of moods, not just the happy,
fluffy, pretty ones. The wide, full range of emotions is, in my opinion, what gives us balance and perspective.
This painting is about people I have observed that, at all costs, maintain the mask of being "positive" -- even
if the sky were falling. These same people tend to criticize others who do not ride on the same "positive bandwagon."
Personally, I find it absurd and bizarre.
I am not a Barbie.
I get pissed-off.
I cuss, I get angry, I cry,
I have attitude.
I also laugh, feel joy,
I find value in ALL emotions.
I am a human.
