About the Painting:
When in a sad mood, most painters I know will paint their sad or melancholy feelings.
I am just the opposite. I tend to turn to memories that make me happy. Maybe it is a desire to create for myself a feeling
or place of joy in an otherwise dark time period.
"Reclining Woman on Rooftop" is such a painting. This painting was painted in 2003, at a time when I was feeling
quite blue. I found myself conjuring up a sweet memory I had of my older brother's house. I stayed in a spare bedroom of
his home when he was going through a bitter divorce, and while I was going through some very troubling things at my job.
The room had a widow that opened up directly on to the rooftop. I could crawl out onto the roof, and lay in a pitched area
under the stars. I remember taking a blanket out there, and falling asleep on the roof under the stars. Doing so seemed
to make all of my stresses and troubles dissolve away.
It is a carefree, peaceful memory I have. This painting was a, whimsical if somewhat abstract, commemoration of that
happy time.
