The idea for "Self Reflection" came out of a strong, personal, and recurring, swirl of opposite emotions I experience each time I do an art show or exhibit.

It never gets any easier for me. It is always nerve racking, and I always find myself wondering if anyone out there will find value or meaning in my ideas. Will anyone understand or relate to how I feel? It is a mixture of confidence and insecurity that accompanies each show I do....even after almost 30 years of painting.

The realization came to me that we all self reflect at some time or another, and that the reflection we see in ourselves changes from moment to moment, and can be influenced, changed, manipulated by the present events in our lives, or the forces of the outside world.

The figure in "Self Reflection" is alone, and is achingly thin, a symbol for truths that cut to the bone. The thinness also sugests a state of vulnerability. I imagine this as a necessary state of being to seriously and honestly look at oneself.

The theme of opposites is carried out by way of the front and back mirrors, opposing reflections. The figure has words written over her form; smart, ugly, strong, weak, confident, insecure, saint, sinner, charitable, greedy, and many more. These words are symbolic of the opposite fashion we see ourselves at different times, the labels we conveniently catagorize these perceptions as, and the fact that at any one time, we can be both of the opposing words, or one or the other, or we can be changelings.

"Self Reflection" is my painter's attempt to visually capture this psychological, uniquely human self-reflection process that I find facinating.
