About the Painting:
In this piece, I wanted to portray the incompatibility of love,
power and politics. My initial idea was to paint Romeo and Juliet on two separate
canvases - trying to touch, but not quite being able to.
The piece evolved on its own. I got the idea to separate the
two canvases with something to emphasize the barrier factor. This morphed into
a whole mixed-media frame that portrayed the love message I wanted to achieve.
This then morphed into a frenzy of hand carved and painted accents (the hearts and dagger). I found the quote that mixed the love
and violence elements (which I loved!). As a finishing touch, I painted the skull/cross
bones on an old, empty perfume bottle to symbolize the poison.
