About the Painting:
King Lear, aging and ready to step down from his throne, calls his daughters to him and wants them to tell him how much they love him.
He in return will base the division of his assets among the daughters based on how
much they love him, The Play is complicated and twisted, but I felt this question
was the act which ultimately led to the demise of all four characters.
Two of King Lears’ daughters professed love on an exaggerated scale, but both had false hearts. They did not care about their father, they only wanted the inheritance. The third daughter made
no effort to over emphasize or embellish her love for her father, which was true
and deep. Simple, honest and unembellished, her expression of love is misinterpreted
by the King as lack of love, and she is banished and disinherited.
There is much more to this tragic play. My painting was inspired by the King’s question of love posed to his three daughters.
