About the Painting:
I found this play to be pretty dark and disturbing. But since it is catagorized as a”comedy,” I chose to show it in a more
whimsical style manner. I focused on the four main characters and something that
iconographically summed up their role in the play.
Starting from the left, Shylock is shown with his bond. Antonio, the Christian,
bears the cross as he extends his borrowed to Bassanio (the “hunkie”
of the play). Bassanio is shown visually selecting the simplest marraige casket,
key dangling above it. His choice of that casket wins him the hand, and love, of the beautiful and wealthy Portia, Christanity plays a key role in this play. I was tickled to find some ornate trim for for
the edges of this painting that resembles beaded crosses.
