About the Painting:
What stood out the most to me in this tragedy were the elements
of misplaced trust, distrust, and the ironic juxtaposition of these with the emotion
of strong, loyal love.
I chose to portray the three main characters in the
play: the strong, warrior-leader Othello, his loving bride Desdemona, and Othello’s scheming so-called “friend”, Iago.
Desdemona is shown embracing her man, Othello. His attention, however, is not on
her. Instead he is focused on the left of the painting, where Iago lurks in
the shadows. The “good-face” mask held by Iago, that which he pretends
for Othello, tilts to reveal the dark force he really is. Draping from Iago’s hand is the notorious handkerchief, the so-called proof of Desdemona’s infidelity and betrayal.
