About the Painting:
I interpreted the choice posed at the beginning of this play, the emotions surrounding it, and the consequences of it.
The choice
is one posed to Isabel by the temporary ruler in power, Angelo. Isabel has
come to Angelo to plead for the life of her brother, Claudio, who is condemned to
die for the legal crime of fornication. Angelo takes a liking to Isabel.
He agrees to spare her brother’s life, providing she will give her virginity to him. Isabel, who was about to become a nun, is faced with an unthinkable choice: the love for her brother (and his
subsequent life) or keeping her virtue.
I depicted the choice by showing Isabel
with her choice (represented by the scale) in front of her. The scale symbolizes both justice (law), and the act of weighing the decision. On one side of the scale is a kneeling, anguished Claudio, and
on the other stands the dominate ruler Angelo.
